Water System Safety Procedures
There are several safety procedures to protect your equipment and your homes plumbing system that need to be negated prior to power and water restoration. We recommend the following and are available to help you with any of these actions:
- The North Carolina Well (NCRWA) association is strongly recommending that all wells in the Asheville Buncombe area be shocked after hurricane Helene has potentially contaminated water tables.
- Turn off power and gas supply to water heaters while you do not have water service.
- Close home emergency safety valves so the pressure regulators don’t become damaged.
- Put water filtration systems into a bypass state.
- Ensure professional water sanitation treatment and testing of well water before consuming.
- Perform safety checks and service sump pumps for safe use after power restoration.
- Installation of a UV light on your plumbing system and/or a reverse osmosis filtration system eliminates bacteria and avoids the need to boil water.
- Check appliances for exposure to any flooding, as these may need to be serviced or replaced.
