Air Conditioning Maintenance
Keeping your air conditioning system running efficiently isn’t something that happens by accident. A properly maintained AC system runs quieter, uses less energy, and lasts years longer than one that only gets attention when something breaks. At Blue Planet Plumbing and Air, we bring the same standards to HVAC maintenance that WNC homeowners have trusted in our plumbing work since 2003.
What’s Included in an AC Tune-Up
Our certified HVAC technicians perform a thorough seasonal inspection covering every component that affects performance, safety, and efficiency:
- Thermostat calibration and operation check
- Air filter inspection and replacement (if needed)
- Evaporator and condenser coil cleaning
- Refrigerant level check and leak inspection
- Electrical connections tightened and tested
- Capacitor and contactor inspection
- Condensate drain line cleaning and flush
- Blower motor and belt inspection
- System cycling and temperature differential test
- Safety controls and shutoff verification
Why Annual Maintenance Matters
The mountain climate in Western NC puts unique demands on home cooling systems. Humid summers, pollen-heavy spring air, and seasonal startup all create conditions that accelerate wear. A single annual tune-up typically pays for itself through lower energy bills and by catching small problems before they become costly emergency repairs.
Without regular maintenance, your AC system can lose up to 5% of its operating efficiency per year. Over the life of a system, that compounds into significant energy costs and shortened equipment life.

Ductless Mini-Split Service & Installation
Ductless mini-split systems are one of the most flexible and energy-efficient ways to heat and cool your home — whether you’re adding comfort to a room without ductwork, upgrading an older home, or replacing window units. Blue Planet Plumbing and Air installs and services all major mini-split brands across Western North Carolina.
What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?
A mini-split system consists of an outdoor compressor unit connected to one or more indoor air handlers. Because they require no ductwork, mini-splits can be installed in spaces where traditional HVAC systems aren’t practical — additions, finished basements, bonus rooms, garages, and older homes without existing duct systems.
Most mini-split systems are heat pumps, meaning they provide both heating and cooling using the same equipment. They are inverter-driven, which means they modulate output to match demand — a key reason they often achieve higher efficiency ratings than conventional split systems.
Mini-Split Installation
Proper installation is the most critical factor in mini-split performance. An undersized line set, improper refrigerant charge, or poor placement of the air handler will undermine an otherwise excellent system. Our technicians are highly trained and follow manufacturer specs precisely.
What We Install
- Single-zone mini-splits (one outdoor unit, one indoor air handler)
- Multi-zone mini-splits (one outdoor unit serving 2–5 indoor zones)
- Wall-mount, ceiling cassette, and concealed duct air handlers
- High-wall and low-wall configurations
- Systems with dedicated dehumidification modes
Ideal Applications
- Home additions and bonus rooms
- Garages and workshops
- Sunrooms and four-season porches
- Older homes without existing ductwork
- Supplemental zoning in specific areas of the home
- Replacement of window AC units
- Vacation rental properties requiring independent zone control
Mini-Split Repair & Maintenance
Like any mechanical system, mini-splits require periodic maintenance and occasionally develop faults. Our technicians carry the diagnostic equipment and factory-level training to service these systems properly.
Mini-Split Maintenance Includes
- Indoor air handler filter cleaning
- Coil cleaning on both indoor and outdoor units
- Refrigerant level and leak check
- Condensate drain cleaning
- Electrical and control board inspection
- Wifi/control interface verification
- Operating mode and performance test
Common Mini-Split Repairs
- Refrigerant leaks and recharge
- Communication errors between indoor and outdoor units
- Condensate drain clogs and overflow
- Remote and control board faults
- Fan motor replacement
- Inverter and PCB board diagnostics

“Blue Planet did the setup of the well water treatment system in our house. They installed a water softener, water sediment filter, UV filter, and also eventually a reverse osmosis system – all of them from WaterTech.
Jeff Gutierrez, ASHEVILLE, NC
Furthermore, we had aluminum issues in our well water, which manifested intermittently and necessitated working with Water Tech’s founder and engineers for multiple weeks and multiple water samples. It took a while to figure out; however, the dedication of Blue Planet’s team, including their owner and support staff, and of WaterTech’s executive team and engineers, helped make the experience much better. It’s just one of the many reasons why Blue Planet has the highest rating in Google. I would recommend them to anyone looking for quality workmanship and dedication to customer satisfaction.”

Heating Maintenance, Repair & Installation
Western North Carolina winters demand reliable heat. Blue Planet Plumbing and Air provides complete heating services — maintenance, repair, and installation — for both furnaces and heat pump systems across Asheville, Hendersonville, and the surrounding WNC communities.

Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are the most energy-efficient heating and cooling solution available for most WNC homes. Rather than generating heat by burning fuel, a heat pump moves heat — extracting warmth from outdoor air even on cold days and delivering it inside. The same system works in reverse during summer, functioning as your air conditioner.
For WNC’s moderate climate, heat pumps are often the most cost-effective long-term choice. Modern cold-climate heat pumps perform efficiently down to temperatures well below freezing, making them well-suited for WNC winters.
Heat Pump Maintenance
Heat pumps work year-round as both your heating and cooling system, which means they log twice the operating hours of a furnace or AC-only system. Regular maintenance is critical to efficiency and longevity.
Heat pump tune-up includes:
- Refrigerant level check and leak inspection
- Coil cleaning — both indoor and outdoor
- Defrost cycle and reversing valve operation test
- Capacitor and contactor inspection
- Auxiliary/emergency heat strip check
- Thermostat and control board verification
- Electrical connections and amp draw measurement
- Filter inspection and replacement
- Outdoor unit clearance and airflow check
Heat Pump Repair
Heat pump repairs require technicians with specific training in refrigerant-based heating systems. Our team is EPA 608 certified and experienced diagnosing issues unique to heat pump operation, including reversing valve failures and defrost cycle problems that are often misdiagnosed.
Common heat pump repairs:
- Refrigerant leak repair and recharge
- Reversing valve failure (the component that switches between heating and cooling)
- Defrost board and defrost cycle issues
- Compressor diagnostics and replacement
- Auxiliary heat strip failure
- Capacitor and contactor replacement
- Thermostat and control board troubleshooting
- Outdoor unit fan motor replacement
Heat Pump Installation & Replacement
If you’re replacing an aging furnace-and-AC combination, or upgrading from electric resistance heat, a heat pump system deserves serious consideration. With rising energy costs and available federal and state efficiency incentives, the return on investment for a high-efficiency heat pump has never been stronger.
Blue Planet Plumbing and Air installs both traditional split-system heat pumps and cold-climate / hyper-heat models optimized for WNC’s elevation and winter temperatures. We’ll help you understand the available equipment, efficiency ratings (HSPF2, SEER2), and whether a dual-fuel system (heat pump paired with a gas furnace) makes sense for your home.

- Traditional and cold-climate heat pump options
- Dual-fuel system installation (heat pump + gas backup)
- Complete removal and disposal of existing equipment
- Installation per manufacturer specs and NC code
- Full commissioning, heating and cooling mode verification
